DRAM makers look to reduce DDR2 testing times.

Since late last year, several DRAM makers have begun requesting that testing houses cut their DDR2 memory testing times by 20-40% amid cost concerns, according to sources. With the growing maturity of the DDR2 market, makers did not see the justification for extended memory testing times, which add a US$0.6-0.8 price premium for testing DDR2, compared with testing DDR, the sources explained.

The collaboration between IBM, Infineon Technologies, Chartered Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics on 45nm production process has progressed, with the first tape out proceeding at IBM"s 12" fab, and other members of the alliance stating they are on schedule to introduce their own production by end of 2006, according to officials from the companies at a recent Chartered technology forum in Santa Clara. The four partners announced their success on 45nm development in late August of 2006 with the first 45nm-made silicon-functional circuits fabricated at IBM"s East Fishkill, New York fab, and officials now indicated that tape-out at the fab has started.

AMD to launch 940-pin CPUs, phase out 939s.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plans to launch a series of 940-pin Socket M2 CPUs, a dual-core processor codenamed Windsor, and the single-core Orleans and Manila processors in the second quarter of 2006, according to unspecified motherboard makers that have reviewed the chip vendor"s latest roadmap. As a result, AMD"s Socket-939 processors are expected to be phased out one year after the release of the Socket-M2 CPUs, indicated the makers.
